R-123 Safety Classification & Room Requirements

R-123 carries an ASHRAE safety classification of B1, meaning it has higher toxicity but lower flammability. Because of its B1 classification, any system using R-123 must be installed in a dedicated machinery room that restricts access to authorized personnel only. This requirement protects building occupants from potential exposure to a refrigerant with a relatively low permissible exposure limit of 50 ppm.

R-123 is B1 (higher toxicity, lower flammability) and requires installation in a dedicated machinery room.
