EPA Disposal Recovery Requirement
The EPA requires refrigerant recovery before the disposal of ANY appliance containing a regulated refrigerant, regardless of the refrigerant type or the size of the charge. This requirement applies to all parties in the disposal chain, including technicians who remove units, scrap metal recyclers, appliance recyclers, and landfill operators. No appliance may be crushed, shredded, or otherwise destroyed with refrigerant still inside the system.
EPA requires refrigerant recovery before disposal of ANY appliance — no exceptions regardless of charge size or refrigerant type.
