Accessing Sealed Systems

Small appliances are hermetically sealed, so technicians need special access methods to recover refrigerant. Piercing valves (also called self-sealing valves, line tap valves, or saddle valves) are clamped onto the refrigerant tubing to create a service port. Process stubs, which are straight pieces of copper tubing brazed onto the compressor housing at the factory, provide another common access point.
