R-12 to R-134a Transition
Older household refrigerators and freezers used R-12 (CFC-12), which has a high ozone depletion potential. R-12 has been replaced by R-134a (HFC-134a), which has zero ODP. When retrofitting an R-12 system to R-134a, the mineral oil must be replaced with polyolester (POE) oil because R-134a is not compatible with mineral oil. All retrofit components must also be verified for compatibility with the new refrigerant.
R-12 was replaced by R-134a in small appliances. Retrofitting requires changing from mineral oil to POE oil.
